CANCELLATION POLICY:  if you pay for your event registration and need to cancel, the cancellation policy will be to provide a full refund if you cancel more than two-weeks prior to the event.  Cancellations after that period will be subject to a cancellation fee or no refund if we have already committed to the venue for food and beverages.

    After the completion of the meeting, a Certificate for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Fire Alarm Education Sessions will be sent to you.   The number of hours will be dependent on the length of the session(s).

    The Certificate can then be submitted to the WBFAA for conversion to Continuing Education Hours for application towards the renewal of your state certification.

    • The CAFAA board will review submissions and compile the final Advance Questions document—anonymous and ordered by submission.

    • Attendees and panelists will receive the final PDF before the event to allow for thoughtful responses and informed discussion.

    • No recording or notes will be provided—attending in person is the only way to access the discussion.

    Understanding Smoke Control Interface with Fire Alarm Systems

    COURSE OUTLINE:

    • The California Building Code (CBC) Chapter 4, requires Smoke Control systems for Specific type of buildings and occupancies, such as High-Rise buildings, Atriums, Underground buildings, Hospitals, Jails, etc.  The CBC and CFC Section 909 has specific requirements for the design, installation and implementation of these systems and the required interface with the Building Fire Alarm System. NFPA 92 is the National standard for Smoke Control systems as adopted by CBC and CFC including specific testing requirements which will be discussed and clarified. 
    • This training will focus on the general CBC/CFC requirements for Smoke Control systems and their specific interface with the building Fire Alarm system. It will cover specific requirements for dedicated and non-dedicated Smoke Control systems, Integrated testing of Fire Alarm and Smoke Control system as required by CFC and NFPA 4 (Integrated testing), Who is responsible for the design, installation and testing of smoke control systems and who is designing and installing Firefighters Smoke Control Panels. Examples will be provided and discussed during this training. 

    GENERAL INFORMATION:  

    Five and one-quarter (5.25) Continuing Education Hours (CEH) will be awarded to students on completion of training.  The CEHs can be converted to Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the WBFAA. There is no cost for conversion if you are a WBFAA member. Cost may apply to non-members.

    Our goal for in-person training is to be able to offer at least one in-person training session, in each region, per topic. And offer multiple topics throughout 2025. 

    FPE and CAFAA will be developing new course material to meet the ever-changing needs of our membership, for a fresh, high-quality, California-centric curriculum.

    Sagiv Weiss-Ishai, P.E. (Calif. Licensed Fire Protection Engineer) is the principal trainer for FPE and will be the instructor.

    *Disclaimer:  As the course trainer, Mr. Weiss-Ishai will not be representing the SFFD policies or procedures in his course delivery. * 

    WHO CAN BENEFIT BY ATTENDING THE CLASS:

    Fire Alarm Systems Personnel: Designers, Installers, Technicians, Service personnel, Vendors, Engineers.

    Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and Code Officials Personnel: Fire, Building, Elevator, Electrical, Code Enforcers and Permit Plans Reviewers.

    Professionals: Architects, Electrical and Fire Protection Engineers.

    Fire Service Personnel: Fire Plan Review Inspectors, Fire Field Inspectors.

    MATERIALS PROVIDED: 

    • Each student will receive a HARD copy booklet (2-slide per page format, double-sided) at the training site. No electronic files will be sent.

    Since 1996, CAFAA has hosted this annual event to foster dialogue between state code officials and stakeholders, including CAFAA members, manufacturers, and AHJs. Representatives from the State Fire Marshal, DSA, Cal/OSHA, HCAI, and the Building Standards Commission are invited.
