COURSE OUTLINE:

The 2025 California Building and Fire Codes (CBC /CFC) are effective in CA since January 1st, 2026. These codes have adopted the 2025 NFPA 72 standard for fire alarm and signaling systems and the 2022 NFPA 1225 for ERCES - Emergency Responders Communications Enhancement systems.

This training will discuss and clarify all new and applicable codes in the new 2025 CA codes and applicable NFPA standards.

Specify and discuss all types of Emergency Communications Systems included in Chapter 24 of NFPA 72 (ECS)- ONE-WAY and TWO-WAY ECS.

Discuss and clarify the specific requirements for ERCES in Section 510 of the 2025 CFC and the 2022 NFPA 1225 Chapter 18. Specific requirements for the required interface between the Radio Enhancement system and the Building Fire alarm System or a Dedicated Function(s) FA system specified in the 2025 Edition of NFPA 72.

Specify the required interface between the ERCES with Elevator systems, survivability levels, and monitoring for integrity per the ASME A17.1 Elevator Code for Leaky Coaxial cables installed in hoistways with specific CA DOSH requirements.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Five and one-quarter (5.25) Continuing Education Hours (CEH) will be awarded to students on completion of training. The CEHs can be converted to Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the WBFAA.

NFPA 72-2025 Chapter 14 outlines the requirements for fire alarm system inspection, testing, and maintenance, including notification procedures and schedules for various components of fire alarm systems, encompassing initial acceptance testing, routine inspections, and reacceptance testing.
The 2025 California Fire Code (CFC) effective in CA since January 1st, 2026, has adopted NFPA 4 - 2024 Edition: "Standard for Integrated Fire Protection and Life Safety System Testing,". NFPA 4 focuses on verifying the interoperability and coordinated performance of interconnected fire protection and life safety systems, ensuring they function as designed during an emergency.
Integrated testing includes the interface between the fire alarm system and other life-safety and fire protection systems in the building, such as sprinkler, fire pump and other suppression systems, smoke control, elevator recall & shunt, ERRCS, ERCES and many other systems.
This training will discuss and clarify the associated and specific requirements of NFPA 72-2025 Chapter 14 and NFPA 4-2021 regarding fire Alarm and signaling systems testing, Inspections and maintenance, who is responsible for what, which sequence and features are required to be tested and the relationship between the AHJs, Inspectors and contractors and the required responsibilities of each trade.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Various types of elevators are found in both low and high-rise buildings. Among these elevators are Hydraulic and Traction (Electric) Elevators with driving machines installed in dedicated spaces referred to as "Elevator Machine Rooms" while Machine-Room-Less (MRL) elevators have their hoisting machines installed directly inside the elevator hoistway. This class will discuss and clarify specific the applicable code requirements of NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) and NFPA 13 (Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems) requirements associated with these elevators, both in buildings provided with "Building Fire Alarm Systems" and those without. Specific 2025 NFPA 72, NFPA 13 (MAJOR CHANGES) and the 2022 edition of ASME A17.1 code terms, such as Dedicated Function FA System for Elevator Recall and Supervisory, Phase-I Emergency Recall Operation, Phase-II In-Car Emergency Operation, Designated and Alternate Recall levels and Shunt-Trip Function will be discussed and clarified. Also, per the 2022 NFPA 1225 (Adopted in CA since 7/1/2024) - All elevator cars are classified as critical areas for radio coverage and will require 99% coverage. This class will discuss this new requirement and the new provisions in ASME A17.1-2022 to allow leaky coaxial cables and RRUs inside elevator hoistways. This class will also discuss the CBC-2025 Chapter 30 requirement for live communication inside elevator cars and CA Group 4/5 Regulations.

Chapter 30 (Elevators) of the 2025 CBC include significant changes related to elevators and sprinkler protection, gurney size, and hoistway smoke protections and hoistway ventilation which will be discussed and clarified.

The 2025 editions of NFPA -72 and NFPA-13 will be presented and discuss with major changes in NFPA 13 regarding sprinkler omissions and protection of hoistways and machine room and suspension means.

The 2022 edition of NFPA 1225 (ERCES) and ASME A17.1 (National elevator Code) will be presented and discussed.

Alterations projects for existing elevators with or without F.E.O (Firefighters Emergency Operations) will be discussed and clarified.

Special types elevators such as LULAs, Private Residence, MRLs will be discussed and clarified

COURSE OUTLINE:

Various types of elevators are found in both low and high-rise buildings. Among these elevators are Hydraulic and Traction (Electric) Elevators with driving machines installed in dedicated spaces referred to as "Elevator Machine Rooms" while Machine-Room-Less (MRL) elevators have their hoisting machines installed directly inside the elevator hoistway. This class will discuss and clarify specific the applicable code requirements of NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) and NFPA 13 (Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems) requirements associated with these elevators, both in buildings provided with "Building Fire Alarm Systems" and those without. Specific 2025 NFPA 72, NFPA 13 (MAJOR CHANGES) and the 2022 edition of ASME A17.1 code terms, such as Dedicated Function FA System for Elevator Recall and Supervisory, Phase-I Emergency Recall Operation, Phase-II In-Car Emergency Operation, Designated and Alternate Recall levels and Shunt-Trip Function will be discussed and clarified. Also, per the 2022 NFPA 1225 (Adopted in CA since 7/1/2024) - All elevator cars are classified as critical areas for radio coverage and will require 99% coverage. This class will discuss this new requirement and the new provisions in ASME A17.1-2022 to allow leaky coaxial cables and RRUs inside elevator hoistways. This class will also discuss the CBC-2025 Chapter 30 requirement for live communication inside elevator cars and CA Group 4/5 Regulations.

Chapter 30 (Elevators) of the 2025 CBC include significant changes related to elevators and sprinkler protection, gurney size, and hoistway smoke protections and hoistway ventilation which will be discussed and clarified.

The 2025 editions of NFPA -72 and NFPA-13 will be presented and discuss with major changes in NFPA 13 regarding sprinkler omissions and protection of hoistways and machine room and suspension means.

The 2022 edition of NFPA 1225 (ERCES) and ASME A17.1 (National elevator Code) will be presented and discussed.

Alterations projects for existing elevators with or without F.E.O (Firefighters Emergency Operations) will be discussed and clarified.

Special types elevators such as LULAs, Private Residence, MRLs will be discussed and clarified

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Five and one-quarter (5.25) Continuing Education Hours (CEH) will be awarded to students on completion of training. The CEHs can be converted to Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the WBFAA.
Class size is limited in both locations. We will implement a wait-list process and encourage you to add yourself to the waitlist as that will be a gauge to us that the class should be re-offered.
Our goal for in-person training is to be able to offer at least one in-person training session, in each region, in each calendar quarter.
FPE and CAFAA will be developing new course material to meet the ever-changing needs of our membership, for a fresh, high-quality, California-centric curriculum.
Sagiv Weiss-Ishai, P.E. (Calif. Licensed Fire Protection Engineer) is the principal trainer for FPE and will be the instructor for the two sessions in August.
